Early Life and Career

Joseph Papp was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 22, 1921. He was the son of Hungarian immigrants, and his family struggled financially during the Great Depression. Despite these challenges, Papp developed a passion for theater at a young age. He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began his career as an actor, appearing in Broadway productions such as "The Glass Menagerie."

In 1954, Papp founded the New York Shakespeare Festival with the mission of bringing free Shakespearean productions to the people of New York City. The festival's first production was "Julius Caesar," which was performed in Central Park. The production was a critical and popular success, and Papp's vision for a theater that was open to all began to take shape.

The Public Theater

In 1967, the New York Shakespeare Festival moved into its permanent home in the Astor Place Playhouse, which was renamed the Public Theater. The Public quickly became a hub for groundbreaking theater, showcasing the work of some of the most important artists of the time, including Sam Shepard, David Mamet, and August Wilson.

Papp's commitment to diversity and inclusion was evident in all aspects of the Public's work. He established the Mobile Theater Unit, which brought free performances to underserved communities throughout New York City. He also created the Shakespeare in the Schools program, which introduced young people to the works of Shakespeare and other classic playwrights.
