Smoky's Story

Smoky was born in 1943 in Oklahoma. He was a small, sickly puppy, and his owner, Fred Gipson, was not sure if he would survive. However, Smoky proved to be a tough little dog, and he quickly became Gipson's best friend.

In 1944, Gipson was drafted into the US Army and took Smoky with him to the Pacific Theater. Smoky served as a therapy dog, visiting wounded soldiers and providing them with comfort and companionship. Smoky was a huge hit with the soldiers, and he even helped to save lives.

After the war, Smoky and Gipson returned to the United States, where they continued to work together to help others. Smoky visited schools and hospitals, and he even appeared on television and in movies. Smoky became a beloved national icon, and he was even awarded the Purple Heart.

Smoky died in 1957 at the age of 14. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, and his grave is visited by thousands of people every year.
